How to understand the school league table

Understanding the league table of school resultsEach year, the Higher School Certificate (HSC) league table of school results provides a snapshot of the performance by schools across the State. Trinity Grammar School is considered to be one of the very best schools in the nation, and the world. However, due to their limitations, Trinity’s high performance may not always be reflected accurately in the HSC league tables.

Here's how to understand the school league table ...

The core reason is that the league tables are formulated by the percentage of HSC Band 6 results alone.

Over one third of our Year 12 students in 2016 completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma instead of the HSC. Of these students, three achieved perfect scores of 45, equating to an ATAR of 99.95 and equal to first in the world, while a further 14 students qualified for their IB Diploma at the Distinction level with scores of 40 or more. Trinity’s overall IB results were among the best in the country, however these are not represented in the published league table.

Trinity Grammar School received excellent results in 2016. Here are just a few highlights:

  • A median ATAR of 82.76
  • 18 HSC All Round Achievers or IB Distinctions
  • 13 students received an ATAR equivalent of over 99, equal to approximately the top 1% of the state
  • 22% of students achieved an ATAR equivalent to or above 95
  • 43% achieved an ATAR equivalent to or above 90
  • 54% achieved an ATAR equivalent to or above 85
  • 65% achieved an ATAR equivalent to or above 80.
