HSC courses at TrinityAt Trinity Grammar School, we understand that every boy is unique. The breadth and diversity of our subject choices and academic pathways helps boys to discover their God-given talents and ultimately facilitates an environment where boys can fulfil their life’s purpose. That is why we offer both academic and vocational pathways for our students – one of which is the Higher School Certificate (HSC). This blog will help to showcase the broad range of HSC courses available at Trinity.

There are many reasons why a student may choose to study the HSC. It is a familiar and well-recognised curriculum, offering a varied subject choice, allowing boys to specialise in certain areas such as the arts or science, and providing the opportunity to spread the load between assessments and examinations.

Trinity offers a wide-ranging curriculum for all students – in fact, we offer one of the most diverse choices of HSC subjects in New South Wales. Some of the categories of our HSC subjects include:

1. STEM
Under this category are subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Geography, Information Processes and Technology, Mathematics, PD Health PE, Physics, Engineering Studies, and Software Design and Development. These subjects are appropriate for boys who aspire to work in science, medicine, technology, or engineering. Research even suggests that students who study STEM subjects are more creative, flexible, and will benefit from the changes that are predicted in the workforce and workplaces of the future.

2. Humanities
At Trinity, boys can choose subjects in the humanities such as Ancient History, Economics, History, Legal Studies, and Modern History. These subjects are important for boys to learn because it teaches them to think critically, reflectively and empathetically. Under these subjects, boys are encouraged to weigh evidence sceptically and to consider different views, ultimately helping to develop a broad and international-minded perspective.

3. Arts
The arts play a key role in a boy’s education. Undertaking subjects such as Drama, English, Visual Arts, as well as languages such as Chinese, Classical Greek, French, German, and Latin will offer significant benefits such as new perspectives global awareness, inside the classroom and out.

4. Vocational subjects
Trinity offers Vocational Education and Training (VET) in, Construction, Electrotechnology, Entertainment Industry, Hospitality, and Information and Digital Technology. Vocational education can benefit your son in significant ways and may be the right choice for your son especially if he enjoys practical hands-on learning or has an interest in a certain field or trade.

With many subjects to choose from within the HSC, there are many ways parents can help their sons to choose the right subjects, including:

  • Seeking advice concerning careers from teachers, family friends and career counsellors. For students with a strong career focus, this can be easier, but all students should seek advice about their potential careers and be aware of any university requirements.
  • Allowing students to choose subjects where they can deliberately step into challenges aligned to their passions and interests. Personal interest is one of the best ways of motivating oneself to commit to two intensive years of course study.
  • Keeping options open. Though specialisation can be useful if a student is confident of his future aspirations, few students are so certain. Students unsure of what they wish to do after school are advised to choose a balanced programme of study.

The HSC is an excellent pathway to consider, however, should you and your son want to investigate other options, Trinity also offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. You can learn more about deciding between the HSC and IB in our blog

Trinity provides an abundance of opportunities which nurtures boys to grow into men who are clear and passionate about their unique talents. We actively encourage our students to grow in wisdom and stature and in favour with God and man, in order that they may become responsible, contributing members of society.

We aim to help boys discover their innate talents and unlock their full potential within the context of a supportive Christian environment. We have guided boys to grow in mind, body and spirit for over a century and we know what boys need to truly flourish and succeed.
