Trinity Grammar School aims to develop young men through a thoroughly holistic approach to education. Opportunities to enhance the mind, body and spirit are facilitated through a range of educative experiences. Community Service opportunities are a feature of each Trinity boy’s learning. These opportunities provide the boys with rich and powerful experiences that foster in them a sense of community, responsibility and selflessness, a sense that they are a part of something greater than themselves.
The research on the value of community service in schools points to a range of benefits. These include:
- Improved engagement in learning and academic performance.
- Enhanced personal and social skills, boosting a number of psychological and ethical outcomes.
- Improvements in teamwork, leadership, self-esteem and autonomy.
Ultimately, paradoxically, many students learn that a lifelong, altruistic focus on ‘giving’ to others is, in reality, counter-balanced with the attainment of these rich rewards.
At Trinity there are a number of ways boys are engaged in service. Service Week is an annual programme whereby students commit to a variety of activities such as feeding homeless, serving the elderly, assisting in educating young people with special needs and supporting charity centres and community support initiatives within Sydney, the Northern Territory and Hong Kong.
The School focuses on cultivating servant leadership as part of a dedicated on-going approach. Service in the co-curricular, academic, pastoral and sporting spheres illustrate this commitment. Examples include leadership of sporting groups and co-curricular programmes such as Peer Support, Cadets, the Charity and Community Committee and Cultural Awareness Group. Academic and pastoral opportunities are provided through the International Baccalaureate’s CAS programme and student leadership positions, respectively.
Trinity believes that great opportunities are borne out of service and that these experiences will further enhance the learning opportunities for our boys as they discover their potential, passions and purpose in life.
