Trinity Grammar School in Sydney recently hosted a Water Polo clinic with one of the greatest Water Polo players of all time, Tony Azevedo of the USA. Tony’s career highlights include being a five-time Olympian, 2008 Olympic silver medallist, named seventh Best Athlete in the World by Men’s Journal, awarded Pac 12 Water Polo Player of the Century in 2015, the all-time leading scorer at World Championships, and the first player to win five Pan American Games Gold Medals. He was the former Captain of the US National Men's Water Polo Team. All this after a fall, and near-death experience as a child, that resulted in doctors telling his parents that he would never play sports due to his sustained injuries.

As a retired athlete, Tony’s goal now is to help grow the sport of Water Polo internationally, and transform how it is taught, developed and showcased, with Trinity boys being the most recent beneficiaries. During the clinic, Tony conducted components of his renowned ‘6-8 Challenge.’

Tony AzevedoThis challenge is a youth athlete performance analytics test created by both Tony and Maggie Steffens, both USA Olympic water polo players. The test uses algorithms, machine learning and observation to assess an athlete’s strengths and weaknesses, which are then evaluated to develop customised training plans. The event was an invaluable pre-season experience for the Trinity players who attended.

Boys performed exercises such as tests of strength by getting as high out of the water as possible, working on muscular endurance through weighted egg-beater drills and the fun speed gun drill for players to test their shooting power.

The Trinity touring team plans to catch up with Tony again whilst in Los Angeles during the 2020 Trinity USA Water Polo Tour.

Trinity boys were grateful for this invaluable experience and the chance to pick up tips and tricks from one of the world’s best Water Polo players.
