Clear communication is an essential feature of every culture. It allows us to form connections, influence decisions and motivate change. Yet despite being one of the most important methods of communication, public speaking is often one of the most feared.
At Trinity Grammar School, we know that mastering public speaking is important and takes practice, so we give boys multiple opportunities throughout their school life to present to their peers, teachers and the wider public.
With practice, public speaking can be mastered, providing orators with a number of powerful skills including the ability to successfully Captivate, Motivate and Inform:
An important life skill is that of persuasion or the ability to win over a crowd. Mastering public speaking results in an increase in confidence and with that, a cool and collected presence in front of an audience. It is imperative to be knowledgeable about the subject you are presenting. However beyond that, speakers need to be prepared to answer questions, to speak with poise and use convincing language to elicit intrigue and curiosity, encouraging the audience to want to find out more.
A great orator gains the power to motivate his audience to start, stop and change things. However, to carry an idea forward, you must be able to excite and enliven the audience. It is not enough to simply know about the issues at hand but to make your audience share that passion. Elections have been won simply because one candidate was a better public speaker than the other. Being knowledgeable is a factor, but being able to provoke passion through skilled oratory will motivate the audience to act. A mastery of public speaking enables you to relate to the audience and gain their trust.
The ability to inform is one of the most important aspects of public speaking. Once you’ve garnered an audience’s attention, a good informative speech sharing your knowledge of a subject with an audience enhances their understanding and increases the likelihood of them remembering the information delivered.
